Healthpointe Success Story: Former Diabetes Patient – Thomas Kong

December 22, 2011

My name is Thomas Kong. I have been a diabetic patient for the past 10 years.

All these while, whenever someone tells me that there is a medication or health supplements that would help with my diabetic conditions, I would just pay at any price and consume without any questions asked. However, none of them actually works. A lot of money was spent and a lot of frustration too!

People often comment on my tired and haggard look, they even made jokes out of it without realizing my condition. My eyes were bloodshot and I looked stoned most of the time just like i have just been to the pubs for a few drinks.

As my condition deteriorates, my medication dosage increased. I continued to binge on unhealthy food such as red meat, carbonated drinks, ice-cream, etc, etc as I could not control myself. I started to get blurred vision, numbness in my toes and my wounds were unable to heal properly! All that resulted to a total lost of confidence in myself.

When Michael introduced me to the Health Pointe program, I immediately took it up. Before I even began the program, I could see my blood glucose level dropped from 14 to 5 just by going through the preparation phase.

After I completed the program, my blood glucose actually dropped to 3 from 12.9! My cholesterol level had dropped from 8 to 4, body fat from 24% to 21% and body weight from 80kg to 70kg. My vision improved, I felt lighter, more energetic and regained my self confidence. Even my sinus problem improved. Dr. Zuraimi, my physician, who did my blood test and monitored my progress throughout the program was so happy that she actually cried !

My greatest gratitude to all those who have helped and supported me, especially Michael, Robin, Kit and Haji Aman.

For those reading this message, please do not take your health for granted. Speak to your advisor as soon as possible.

Health is wealth !

Thomas.

Teaching Your Children About Healthy Eating

January 27, 2011

A healthy diet is essential for everyone – especially our children. As your child grows older and begins gaining more independence, it will become harder and harder for you to teach them about healthy eating. This is why it is so important to begin teaching your child healthy eating habits at a young age. By teaching your children about healthy eating, you can guide them on a healthy pathway to adulthood. Here are some tips to help you teach your children about healthy eating.

When it comes to teaching your children about eating healthy, you will want to give them options rather than dictate foods. Of course, you will need to guide them to make proper choices by keeping a variety of healthy foods in the house, but letting your child pick which food they would like to eat will help them learn how to make healthy choices on their own.

Also, try to eat meals as a family as often as possible. Remember – you are your child’s primary role model so it is important that you lead the way in healthy eating habits. If you are eating junky foods, they will want to eat junky foods too. So, be sure to set the example for your child at the dinner table, making healthy food choices for each your child, you, and the rest of your family.

Another great idea to help your child learn about healthy eating habits is to involve them in food shopping and the preparation of meals. This will give your child the opportunity to explore the world of food and learn which foods are healthy and which ones should stay on the shelf! It will also give your child a feeling of accomplishment, making them more willing to try new foods.

Of course, if you want to teach your children how to eat healthy and make healthy food choices, you will have to know how to eat healthy yourself. If you want your child to grow healthy and strong, a whole foods diet is the best way to go. Providing your child with a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, will provide them with all of the nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that their body needs to grow healthy and strong. The best part about a whole foods diet? Whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, are low in calories, carbohydrates, and fats so your child can eat large portions without worrying about weight gain or unhealthy side effects.

Finally, when teaching your children about eating healthy, remember that your child is still a child! While you want to encourage healthy eating and snacking, you do not need to deprive them completely of all the little goodies like chips and cookies. An occasional calorie filled snack will not harm your child, so allow them to be children and indulge every now and again.

Did you know half of Malaysia children will have a weight problem and a third will have diabetes?

January 17, 2011

In the recent Clinical Practice Guidelines for Management of T2DM, Prof Nor Azmi Kamaruddin, president of the Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society highlighted the following alarming facts:

Nearly two million Malaysians suffer from diabetes. Obesity and weight management are linked to this rising trend. – AFPRelaxnews

  • At the present rate, half of our children will have a weight problem and a third will have diabetes!
  • Two-thirds of patients with diabetes will die due to cardiovascular diseases.
  • Obesity-related cancers will double in 40 years time.
  • If all of us were to do something about our lifestyle, the current rate of diabetes and obesity will only come down in 20 years time
  • The implications on the economy when a greater portion of our national income will be spent on diseases brought about by obesity and diabetes (treating heart diseases and cancers are not cheap)

Update: Teaching Your Children About Healthy Eating

Number of obese growing bigger, says Liow (Health Minister or Malaysia)

May 15, 2010

Did you know About 50% of 13 million Malaysian adults could be overweight or obese? Part of the statistic includes our current Health Minister YB. Datuk Liow Tong Lai who admitted this when he revealed this figures. Read the following Article taken from The Star

Number of obese growing bigger, says Liow
By AUDREY EDWARDS

PETALING JAYA: About 50% of 13 million Malaysian adults could be overweight or obese, a worrying trend that seems to be on the rise.

Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said while the National Health and Morbidity Survey in 2006 revealed that 43.1% of Malaysian adults were overweight or obese, which was double the figure from a decade ago, the numbers could have already increased since then.

Liow blamed the disturbing situation on the lack of proper health knowledge, adding that Malaysians needed to be better informed and motivated to stay healthy, in terms of diet, physical activity, stress management and disease prevention.

He said Malaysians had also grown accustomed to an affluent lifestyle, and were more comfortable sitting at home and watching television or being in front of the computer, instead of enjoying the outdoors.

“For example, how many people know that losing even a modest five to 10% of their weight can result in better health?” he said in his speech yesterday when launching Nutrition Month Malaysia 2008.

Saying he himself was overweight, Liow said Malaysians took “eating right” lightly as they did not know what to eat, when to do so and how much they should consume.

“There is plenty to eat but unfortunately, many of us are not making wise decisions on what and how much to eat. Instead, we act on impulse,” he added.

“With our busy lifestyles, we would rather eat out than at home, opt for fast food rather than cook at home.

“And too often, we spare little thought about health and the nutritional value of what we put into our tummies.”

Malaysian Association for the Study of Obesity president Prof Dr Mohd Ismail Noor later said that about 90% of overweight and obese adults in the country were “very likely” to develop diabetes.

“What is worrying are younger people who have diabetes and are also overweight.

“You do not have to wait until you are 40 to have this disease. They are now as young as 25,” he said.

He also said if one of a person’s parents was overweight or obese, the chances of his being in a similar situation was 40%.

The chances increased to 80% if both parents were either overweight or obese, he added.

Genetic predisposition, he said, contributed to between 10% and 15% of those who faced the weight problems.
